Life is always interesting.
My sister gave us a gift certificate to a wonderful restaurant in Portland called bluehour for our birthdays. We happily dressed the celebratory part and went out last Saturday evening. As we approached the restaurant, which has a patio out front, we noticed what appeared to be picketers taking laps through the patio. I though maybe they were underpaying their dishwashers but as we got closer we could hear them chanting, "foie gras sucks...force fed ducks"!!!!!
We crossed the picket line, a first for both M. and me, and made our way to the reception area. As we stood there waiting about 8-10 police officers arrived to try and encourage the protestors to leave. Oddly enough they were wearing latex gloves. Not sure what they were expecting but it might help if they decided to prep some onions in the kitchen.
The host quickly seated us inside where we could only faintly hear the chanting over the bar music and here is our secret confession...we ordered the foie gras! ugh! This restaurant is known, as if that wasn't obvious, for it's foie gras. And, it was amazing. Produced in California and perfectly prepared, we enjoyed every last bite. The rest of the meal was also remarkable, truly.
By the time we left, almost 3 hours later, the streets were empty. Maybe the protestors had moved onto a late night clinic. Strange how people feel compeled to make decisions for you, right? That is what it boils down to after all. Can I decide what I want to eat or should someone else like the government, or radicals, or coca cola tell me what to have or have not.
